Confusion over post box in Newtonhill

the question of the installation of a new postbox in the Cairnhill area of Newtonhill has prompted local councillors to criticise Royal Mail for their handling of the issue.

North Kincardine Councillor Carl Nelson told members at the October meeting of the Newtonhill, Muchalls and Cammachmore community council that he had spent months trying to find out if an additional post box is planned for the village. He said that he was told by Royal Mail that a planning application for the post box had been submitted and would be situated somewhere in the Cairhnill area.

Councillor Nelson said: “I have been on to Royal Mail several times, and was told that a planning application had been submitted and the post box would be situated somewhere in the Cairnhill area, but the planning department at Aberdeenshrie Council don’t seem to know anything about it. Why are they telling me they have submitted a planning application?”

Fellow North Kincardine Councillor Ian Mollison - who is a former Royal Mail employee - told the meeting that the company do not need planning permission from the local authority to install a post box, and are only required to check with them that there are no pipes under the ground where they intend to dig a hole to plant the post box.

Councillor Mollison told the meeting that he was disappointed with Royal Mail’s response to the queries. He said: “I am appallled with Royal Mail’s handling of this. They should be ashamed of themslves. Myself and Councillor Nelson have been chasing this for months.

“They do not need planning permission for a post box so why they are saying this I do not know. They are being economical with the truth.

“Are they going to put in a post box? It’s a simple question. All they need to do is say ‘yes, we are planning to do it’ or ‘no we decided it would not be viable’.”

Councillor Nelson told the meeting that he would continue trying to get an accurate response from Royal Mail, adding: “Why are they telling me that they have submitted a planning application when they don’t even need one? I will keep chasing this up until I get an answer.”

newtonhill is a village served by 3 post boxes and a part time p/o counter already. Royal mail need to tell the council and especially ex employee Mollison to f/off and walk to the nearest availible one. I' m on Rms side on this issue (strange as that may b). If he is so concerned y doesnt he arrange to collect all the mail from the Cairnhill area (probs aboot 20 letters on average ) and then deposit it in one of the aforementioned boxes. Plonker
