Old Trolley Equipment

When I worked for British rail, in the days of the TPOs, there were two trolleys in use for mail and parcel post, the BRUTE (British Rail Universal Trolley Equipment) and the MATE. Can someone put me out of my misery and remind me what the letters MATE stood for. The trolleys were plywood cages that could be towed in line by platform electric barrows. With the ending of mail by rail the MATEs disappeared. Thanks.

I think their use was stopped due to H&S rules. Otherwise the amount of staff complaining about getting splinters in their fingers... And when you pushed 'em - you couldn't see where you were going!

Don't know for sure about the 'M' But, Automated Towing Equipment springs to mind/memory. Mechanical for the 'M'?
