A ROYAL Mail security guard has been taken to hospital after a robbery outside a Co-op store in Wollaton today.
Two men wearing dark clothing threatened the guard with what was believed to be a firearm.
They then struck him with the weapon before making off with a quantity of cash.
The two offenders got into a green car which was waiting nearby and sped off in the direction of Coventry Lane.
The guard was taken to the Queen's Medical Centre, though his injuries are not thought to be serious.
A second guard in the van was uninjured.
A man who lives opposite the Co-op but didn't want to be named said: "First I saw of it was when loads of police suddenly arrived.
"You don't usually see this sort of thing happening here so it is quite a shock."
Officers were called to the scene in Trowell Road just after 12.20pm today.
Five police vehicles and an ambulance were reported to have attended and an area was cordoned off.
A member of staff at the travel agents next to the Co-op said she saw people rushing out of the shop at the time of the incident.
Anyone who saw the incident or a green car in the Trowell Road or Coventry Lane area should call police on 0300 300 9999 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
