A GOLF pro was given a conditional discharge after he admitted defrauding Royal Mail.

Ronald Tickle, 45, from Hipperholme, used the alias Barry McDivot to claim around £570 from Royal Mail for undelivered packages.

The Royal Mail offers compensation for packages that aren't delivered or go missing in the post.

But Tickle, a former club professional at Lightcliffe Golf Club, never actually sent the packages he was claiming for.

Thomas Pickles, 31, from Lightcliffe, appeared alongside Tickle although he played a minor role in the fraud.

Pickles told police he had never bought any items by post and Tickle had suggested they carry out the claims.

Pickles's role was to keep all the correspondence for the scheme.
Suspicions were aroused after many of the weights claimed for could not have been sent using the service.

Both men admitted conspiracy to defraud the Royal Mail.

Tickle received an 18-month conditional discharge and was ordered to pay £126 compensation. Pickles was given a conditional discharge.
