City of York Council urged to back postal workers

YORK’S council boss is to be asked to take up the cause of almost 170 postal workers who fear for their jobs.

Fresh concerns have been raised about the future of the city’s sorting office after it emerged Royal Mail proposed to extend its Leeds mail centre and transfer work there from other local bases.

York Central MP Hugh Bayley said the plans would mean York’s Leeman Road office operating purely as a delivery centre, along the lines of Birch Park in Huntington.

At Guildhall on Thursday, councillors will debate a motion on the issue.

It will call for council chief executive Kersten England to write to her Royal Mail counterpart, Moya Greene, and air concerns about the potential loss of first-class mail sorting from the city.

Royal Mail has confirmed 168 processing workers are based at York Mail Centre, although the Communication Workers’ Union has previously claimed about 350 jobs could be in danger.

Acomb councillor Tracey Simpson-Laing, who has tabled the motion, wants the council to say it “deplores” the decision to privatise the Royal Mail, recently announced by business secretary Vince Cable, and to say it could “hasten the proposed removal of first-class mail sorting from York”.

She said: “A fully funded modernisation programme has been agreed by management and unions, in York and nationally, to bring stability to the company.

“Privatisation will lead to the separation of the Royal Mail and the Post Office network, putting the existence of many post offices in York and throughout the country at risk.”

She said collections and deliveries could be hit and the number of post-boxes cut, and said the plans could harm the UK economy.

She said: “The loss of the York sorting office jobs will impact on the York economy and affect the health and well-being of workers and their families.”

Coun Simpson-Laing’s motion also calls for Mrs England to write to Dr Cable calling for the privatisation plans to be halted.
