The global postal industry cut its carbon emissions by over half a million tonnes in 2009, the International Post Corporation (IPC) announced.
A group of 20 organisations throughout the world, including the UK, have signed up to the Environmental Measurement and Monitoring System programme to adopt a global approach to sustainability.
Now, it is one-third of the way towards its 2020 target to reduce emissions by 20 per cent.
Chief executive and president of the IPC Herbert-Michael Zapf welcomed the news, but stressed that in the first year of the scheme the results will be far greater.
"In an effort to cut a maximum of CO2 emissions and make a strong impact in this first year of reporting, participating posts will naturally have focused on areas where emissions reductions will have been most readily achievable, whether in driving energy efficiency or converting to green electricity," he explained.
Royal Mail is even trialling hydrogen-fuelled vans for short-distance deliveries as a green transport option.
In addition to the announcement, the Austrian and Italian postal services also signed up to the programme.
