Postbox sealed up because it is 'unsafe'

A POSTBOX has been sealed up as roadworks in the area mean it has been deemed “unsafe”.

The box at Cuckoo Corner, Southend, outside the Earls Hall parade of shops, was sealed up leaving traders complaining it has further stopped passing trade to the area.

Last week, the council’s ongoing £5million improvements to the Cuckoo Corner roundabout were already adversely affecting trade to the businesses in the parade.

Dennis Lee, owner of the One Store convenience shop, said: “Nobody can post anything along the parade. People usually come and get stamps to post their letter. It has become very inconvenient for the traders. They have to post letters and leaflets all the time. It brings people through the doors, but I will be losing that as well.”

A Royal Mail spokesman said: “As a result of ongoing building works, the postbox on Prince Avenue has been sealed off as it has been deemed unsafe for our customers. In the meantime, customers can continue to use the postboxes in Burrhill Chase, Thornford Gardens, Hampton Gardens and Manners Way which are located nearby.”

The council said it is aware the box has been sealed, but the area is safe for public access.

It also said it is aiming to complete the work in front of the parade by the end of next week.

Andrew Meddle, Southend council’s head of planning and transport, said: “The post box at Earls Hall Parade has been temporarily sealed up for operational reasons in respect of collections. The area around the postbox and shops is safe for public access.

“We are working very closely with the traders and the post office over this issue. Details of the nearest alternative postboxes are available on the sealed-up box.

“We have made every effort to complete this section of the junction improvement works in front of the shops as quickly as possible.”
