ROYAL Mail could make postal workers jobless in Medway if plans for a super sorting office go ahead.

Plans for a centralised office in Norman Close, Strood, could spell disaster for staff at the Chatham and Rochester offices, with state-of-the art sorting machinery leading to a reduction in staff.

Royal Mail has confirmed 400 jobs would be cut across Kent.

A Royal Mail worker from Medway said: "We are all for modernisation and change but only where it's affordable and practical in a way that would keep jobs."

Royal Mail bosses say sorting offices in Maidstone, Tonbridge, Dartford and Canterbury are also outdated and do not have enough space for the latest machinery.

All four offices would close if the plans go ahead, with all work centralised by spring 2012.

The company said it is hoping to make the move without compulsory redundancies.

Up to 22 jobs could be cut from the Rochester office, with more at risk at Best Street Chatham.

Your question is too logical. Most likely closures will go ahead just before privatisation then just after it everyone will realise it would have been best to close other ones instead.
