Grassington postmen raise funds for playground

Two singing postmen have raised cash towards improving facilities at a Grassington playground.

Posties Phil Brown and Andrew Avison – whose folk band Kimpergill Willy has now been joined by Paul Coultas – have dedicated their spare time to penning songs which they then bestow on unsuspecting customers in the village’s Foresters Arms pub.

The trio provide regulars with a range of songs penned on local themes and topics and have found themselves gracing the music and video website YouTube.

Their newest song, named Channel 4, relates to local opinion on a documentary which is about to be filmed in the village.

Last year Phil and Andrew cut a CD titled Flowery Wham – A Dale Of Two Hippies, which has been placed in shops in Grassington, and they are donating the proceeds to the playground fund.

“Sales have been slow, probably because we were a little reluctant to seek publicity, but now we are prepared to sing anywhere to raise money for the play area,” said Phil. “It has become a mission because it seems plans made not so long ago to update the playground have got pushed back. At one time they were at the top of the agenda.

“We know we can’t raise enough money ourselves to pay for all the repairs and update the equipment – £78,000 at the last count – but it would be good to get the playground back on track and remind people that it hasn’t gone away. There are plenty of other things going on in the village for older people, but people are forgetting that the children are important and they need a safe place to play.”

The group has just handed over a cheque for £375 to the playground committee, which will go towards the fund. The group has its own website, kimpergillwilly.
