Police were called at 8.43pm yesterday to reports that a male pedestrian had been hit by a red Toyota MR2, and that the driver had immediately left the scene.

The collision occurred in Grafton Way, outside the Royal Mail sorting office.

Police and paramedics were in attendance and the casualty, a 43-year-old man from Ipswich, was initially taken to Ipswich Hospital.

He was then transferred to Addenbrookes hospital with head injuries where he remains in a critical but stable condition.

The access roads to the junction between Grafton Way and Princes Street were closed until around 1.40am this morning.

Police are actively making enquiries to trace the driver of the red Toyota MR2, which has been recovered by officers.

Police are appealing for anyone who was in the area at the time, or who has any information, to contact the Serious Collision Investigation Team (SCIT). Police are also appealing directly to the driver of the vehicle to come forward.

Calls in relation to this incident should be made to Pc Roy Dade at the SCIT on 01473 613500.
