A pair of Watford postmen will be making a special delivery to Eastern Europe next week, as they deliver a lorry full of aid to a Moldovan children’s orphanage.
Abdul Khalifa and Dave Sims, who both work at the Watford sorting office, in Ascot Road, plan to drive the seven-and-a-half tonne Royal Mail lorry more than 500 miles through eight countries on their way to the town of Tiraspol – officially the poorest in Europe.
The marathon mercy mission, to deliver clothes, toys and vital supplies, is a joint venture organised by the Communication Workers’ Union (CWU), Royal Mail and BT.
The men will leave in the early hours Thursday morning, driving first to Newcastle before catching a ferry to Holland. From there they will drive though Germany, Austria, Czech Republic and Romania before finally arriving in Moldova.
Mr Khalifa, 50, of Chester Road, said: “I have always wanted to do something like this. A lot of Royal Mail staff give to charity every month straight out of their wages, but they never see where the money goes. This is a chance for us to see that for ourselves.
“I’m looking forward to going but I am a bit nervous. The furthest I’ve ever driven in Europe before is from Calais to Paris, so this is going to be a very new experience for me.”
Mr Khalifa and Mr Sims will return on Friday, September 17.
