Two-year battle for cash with Royal Mail

A WOMAN has won a two-year battle against the Royal Mail after complaining about missing money.

Helen Drury said £900 was missing from a recorded delivery package sent by her former husband.

But the Royal Mail dismissed her complaint.

Now Helen has had the last laugh after taking them to court, representing herself, and giving them a bloody nose.

The row started when ex Peter Kyrou sent the money using special delivery.

Helen, of Wallsend, North Tyneside, said: “The silver envelope arrived in a damaged condition with no money inside.

“It had been slashed with either razor blades or a craft knife.

“I got a letter from Royal Mail apologising that it had been damaged in their care. I thought it would be a simple matter to get compensation but they refused to do anything.”

Helen launched legal action against the company at North Shields County Court.

The case was dismissed at an earlier hearing but Helen, not to be put off, continued with further action.

I had contacted the Royal Mail way back in March in the hope of getting the row sorted without fuss, but they did not take the opportunity.

I was told: “The case was dismissed on the basis of the defence barrister’s representations.”

Fast forward to now and Helen won her further action.

She said: “I was determined not to give up just because they are bigger than me. I could not afford a solicitor so I acted for myself even though I was nervous. I was so nervous that I turned up a day early at court!

“I didn’t get the whole amount because Peter had ticked the wrong box on the back of the envelope detailing the weight, but I got £500 plus court costs of £215.

“Two years is a long time to fight and it became a matter of principle.”

I went back to the Post Office
to see what they had to say this time.

A spokeswoman said: “In a case like this involving a tracked service we would always seek to settle any claim very quickly once evidence of the value of the contents was presented to us.

“In this case we will, of course, abide by the court’s decision and we are sorry for the inconvenience experienced by the customer.”

i always wondered about RM covering cash with SD and providing proof
eg if i have put aside some cash in a tin or whatever and then send it via SD i have no proof

Surely nowadays large amounts of money should be sent by moneygram? I know you pay extra but it's well worth.There really is no need to send wads of cash through the post.

Except banks sent various obscure foreign currencies to their branches by Special Delivery.
