Postal night flights bring benefits

Sir, I refer to Mr Miklinski's letter (Courier 20.8.10) concerning the additional Royal Mail flights that are to operate from Inverness Airport.

As a recently-arrived local resident, I could not be happier that the airport has secured this additional business, especially so given the current economic climate.

I do, however, have to declare a vested interest. I work for a company at Inverness Airport that currently sends staff to RAF Kinloss to assist Loganair in their operation for the Royal Mail.

The move of these flights to Inverness Airport will strengthen our business and, possibly and hopefully, the longer opening hours will attract other flights and create further employment for local people.

Moreover, the new arrangement will result in an annual saving for our company of 520 man hours, 23,000 miles on the A96, approximately £4300 in fuel, the wear and tear on two vehicles, and a more sociable working life for those of our staff who travel to RAF Kinloss five days a week.

With regard to consulting on additional flights, I know that Ardersier and Petty Community Council are represented on the airport's Consultative Committee, and have been regularly addressed by airport management.

Perhaps this is the vehicle through which Mr Miklinski should air his concerns?

David Hourston, Rowan Lea, Ardersier.
