Newport Royal Mail sorting office closure date announced

The Royal Mail sorting office in Newport will close on January 17 next year and the operation will be transferred to Telford, it was revealed today.

The company said the jobs of all 28 staff at Newport were safe and they would also move to the Telford office in Commercial Way, Oakengates.

Royal Mail has pledged to help with increased travel costs for staff.

"Royal Mail has assured residents of Newport it has no immediate plans to close the delivery office in the town.
The pledge came in response to a petition sent to the company by concerned residents in February calling for the office to be spared the axe.
Jaquie Stenson, a spokeswoman for Royal Mail, said: “Faced with full competition and declining mail volumes, Royal Mail constantly reviews the operational efficiency and commercial practicality of all its units, but currently we have no firm plans in place for Newport Delivery Office.”

and that was 28th April - just four months ago.
