THE future of a village post office is unclear after it was closed for the second time in two months.
Staff at the Southminster sub-post office confirmed that the North Street branch will shut today following the close of business at midday.
An interim postmaster was appointed in June after the branch closed for two weeks because of an audit.
However, his tenure has come to an end and no replacement has yet been found, so the branch will close once again.
Chairman of Southminster Parish Council, Brian Beale, confirmed the branch is closing but could reopen in the near future if a new postmaster can be found.
Mr Beale said: “It is not a dead duck.
“The temporary postmaster said he could only do it until the start of August.
“As far as I know, the post office is shut for the immediate future but there may be developments later on that mean it can carry on.”
However, Royal Mail has denied the claim.
A spokesperson for Post Office Ltd said: We are not aware of any changes at Southminster Post Office and we remain committed to the provision of post office services in the area.”
In July, the company also told the Standard that “Post Office Ltd is committed to maintaining a service in this area and will do its best to ensure there is no further disruption to this service.”
Residents submitted a petition to Royal Mail in a bid to show the strength of feeling in the village.
Villagers will now face a trip to Bradwell or Burnham to use services.
Mr Beale added: “We sent letters of support for the branch to the post office. It is an integral part of village life.”

Another office closes due to an adverse audit.
Did it really really have to?
Is there no room for a second chance if the accounts have a discrepancy in them, or are POL engaged in a new type of closure program?
This kind of one strike and you are out does not exist in the Crown Office Network, Crown employees are given massive lengths of rope before they are hung!
