Conman steals pension from Sutton woman

A conman stole an elderly woman’s pension from her home after claiming the money was fake.

The thief stole £140 from the 88-year-old at her house on Milton Avenue, Sutton, some time between noon and 1.30pm.

The woman had returned home after collecting £100 pension from the Post Office when a man knocked at her door claiming the money was fake.

A police spokesman said the woman allowed the man into her home after he said he was from the Post Office and needed to examine the cash.

The man then asked if she had other money he could inspect and she showed him another £60.

The bogus caller then collected all £160 and fled.

PC Pat Simcox, of Sutton’s Crime Prevention Team, urged residents not to allow in callers that they didn’t know or weren’t expecting.

She said: “If in doubt, keep them out. Residents must call police immediately.”

The man was white, aged between 30-40, of medium build, smartly dressed with neat and tidy hair and had a London accent.

In a similar case on Wednesday July 28, a man and woman posing as officials from the Pension Department stole a wallet after tricking their way into the Worcester Park home of a man aged 78, and woman, 83.
