Postman honoured for charity work

A postman who raised £400,000 for good causes including the children's hospice has been honoured by Royal Mail.

Malachy McGovern, who lives in the Holywood area of Co Down and works at the Northern Ireland Mail Centre, was presented with a Royal Mail Chairman's Award for Excellence.

The 48-year-old scooped the prize in the community champion category at a ceremony in London.

Malachy was founder of the Penny Black Club six years ago, where staff at Royal Mail's mail centre in Mallusk volunteer to help charitable causes.

His manager Gerry Teggart said: "Malachy really gets the team going and is a great ambassador for Royal Mail.

"He works unselfishly for the benefit of others either less fortunate or recently bereaved.

"No charity event is the same without him - whether he is raising money or being a Santa for the hospice children and making them smile."

The award was made in recognition of the postman's efforts to support his local community.

The honours presented today recognised customer excellence, community champions and best colleague with only the top four people throughout the UK in each category invited to the ceremony, where awards were presented by Royal Mail chairman Donald Brydon.

Colleagues said Mr McGovern supports numerous charities, and said he had done great work for the Northern Ireland Children's Hospice, where he has been a carer in the past.
