A U.S. Postal Service employee was in federal custody Thursday after authorities said he stole thousands of dollars from the post office where he worked as a letter carrier.
Rodney Harvey took about $15,000 from the Roy Royall Post Office, 4206 Little York, U.S. Postal Service officials said. The theft occurred at about 7 p.m. Wednesday.
“He left for the day then returned shortly after the office closed with a mask on,” said Dionne Montague, a Postal Service spokeswoman.
Investigators said Harvey, 34, ran into a nearby wooded area with the money bag as police arrived to investigate the theft.
“They saw him come out of the woods and questioned him. The questioning led to his arrest,” Montague said.
No weapon was used during the theft. Harvey later led investigators to the spot in the woods where he stashed the money bag, Montague said.
He is expected to make his first appearance in federal court Friday. Harvey could face a robbery charge or theft of public funds charge, officials said.
