Extra workers are to be recruited at Newark Delivery Office after staff shortages left some households without a postal service for days at a time.
Royal Mail is taking on five delivery staff at its Pelham Street premises.

The Advertiser was contacted by a number of people in Newark and Balderton complaining that they had received only an intermittent delivery service since the beginning of the month.

Mrs Linda Grimmett, of John Gold Avenue, Newark, said: “It was my son’s 18th birthday and we had ordered him the computer game, Alone in the Dark, in order to get it on release day.

“We paid extra to have it sent first-class recorded, but it hasn’t arrived. Royal Mail say they can’t deliver it and it is stuck in Newark.

“It is disappointing.”

Similar problems were encountered by others.

Sarah Short, of Broughton Drive, Newark, said: “This is not the first time it has happened.

“If we were late paying a bill because of a late delivery, who would cover the late payment costs?”

Other roads affected included Albert Street, Newark, and Wordsworth Drive, Balderton.

Residents of the former Castle Brewery, now apartments, say they have been told they are not a regular round any more and describe the delivery service they receive as sporadic at best.

Resident Mr Ian Howe said people were expecting birthday cards and important mail but mainly, these had to be collected from the Newark Delivery Office.

A Royal Mail spokesman said: “We would like to apologise to any customer in Newark who has not received the level of service they expect and deserve from Royal Mail.

“To address staffing shortages which affected the delivery of mail to some areas of Newark earlier this month, we are recruiting a number of additional delivery staff.

“Employees at Newark Delivery Office are working very hard to ensure the best possible level of service and customers can be assured that we are taking action to ensure they receive the consistent delivery service they expect.”
