A POSTMAN who helped lead two pensioners from a house fire has won an award for his bravery.
Stephen Jones, 48, was about to go on duty when he noticed smoke coming from a house in Llanfairfechan.
Rushing into the house, the postman helped escort a 71-year-old woman and her carer to safety.
After over 100 nominations from members of the public commending their local posties, Stephen was chosen alongside ten others for their high efforts.
Now Stephen, from Bangor, and two other Welsh posties have won Wales’ Royal Mail First Class 2010 awards, recognising posties that go beyond their call of duty in their work day.
The postman will go to London alongside eight regional finalists to be presented with £500 and a winner’s certificate by The One Show presenter Christine Bleakley and Royal Mail managing director Mark Higson.
The UK’s best postman or woman will be announced on the day and receive £1,000
Geoff Braden, Royal Mail’s regional operations director for Wales, said: “This popular award attracts thousands of nominations from customers in the UK, all keen to praise and commend the postmen and women they feel play an active part in their individual communities. The award enables Royal Mail to recognise and reward their efforts and to encourage others to follow suit.”
