A SECURITY scare at a mail sorting office in Peterborough was sparked after a mysterious substance was discovered in the post.

Police, four fire crews and a hazardous materials unit were called to the Royal Mail sorting office in Papyrus Road, Werrington, Peterborough, after a worker found the powder.

Workers at the depot were evacuated as investigations took place. But after closer examination, it was revealed that the substance was sugar.

The incident happened at 7am on Monday, May 18.

A spokeswoman from Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “One crew from Dogsthorpe, one crew from St Neots, one crew from Stanground, a rescue vehicle from Dogsthorpe and a hazardous materials unit from St Neots were called to the Royal Mail sorting office in Papyrus Road, Werrington, Peterborough.

“Firefighters arrived and were told that a suspicious package had been discovered.

“Crews requested the attendance of crime scene investigators from Cambridgeshire police and prepared for a decontamination of the scene.

A police spokeswoman said: “We were called to the scene but the package was found not to be suspicious.”

Police are not investigating the incident because it is understood not to have been malicious.

A Royal Mail spokesperson said the office reopened at 8.30am.

"it was revealed that the substance was sugar" - that's often on the floor near the kettle in the DOM's office where I work, but it's never resulted in Police, four fire crews and a hazardous materials unit being called in. They must take everything very seriously in Peterborough.
