A postman who rescued a stroke victim he found lying unconscious on her kitchen floor has won the Yorkshire section of the Royal Mail's first class people awards for 2010.

Craig Francis, who works at Barnsley delivery office, saw the elderly woman as he delivered mail to her home in Dodworth in September last year. As the door was unlocked, he went in and gave first aid while waiting for an ambulance.

He wins £500 from the regional contest and and goes on to a national ceremony on May 24. A Royal Mail spokeswoman said the awards recognise and reward the organisation's otherwise unsung heroes.

If you have are out on delivery and see something untoward (such as an ill customer, a fire or premises that have been broken into) and have to wait on the emergency services, can you legitimately claim this as overtime and would RM pay it?
Does anyone have any experience of this?

This makes me question what we are and are not meant or allowed to do beyond the call of duty, for example in the arctic weather last winter was it acceptable to take bags of groceries with the mail in the van to isolated elderly countryfolk who were running out of food ?
