Daily Express: 7% rise for postmen 'foolish'

AN inflation-busting pay deal which will see Royal Mail staff earn more for shorter hours was slammed last night.

The seven per cent rise could jeopardise the firm’s future, experts said.

Staff voted in favour of the package hammered out after pre-Christmas strikes left the postal service in chaos.

Royal Mail welcomed the Communication Workers Union’s backing for the deal which means its £2billion modernisation programme can continue. But Taxpayers’ Alliance chief executive Matthew Elliott said Royal Mail management had caved in following the strikes.

“Royal Mail is struggling to survive the burden of its current wage bill, so further increases are very foolish. Sadly, because the company has buckled, its problems are just going to continue.”

The deal for 150,000 staff starts with a two per cent increase this year followed by 1.4 per cent and 3.5 per cent rises over the next two years.

Full-time employees will get a £1,400 lump sum bonus which will be paid pro-rata to part-timers.

Maternity and paternity pay will improve. Job guarantees mean full-time staff will make up at least three-quarters of the workforce.

British Airways cabin crew are to be urged to reject an offer in their dispute over jobs and working practices after talks ended without agreement.

Unite will ballot 12,000 union members. Strikes last month caused travel chaos.

Sadly, because the company has buckled,

If only everyone on here could see it that way.
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

What moron wrote that? How the hell in his tiny innumerate mind does he manage to work out that a 2% rise is "inflation busting" when inflation is currently running at 3.9 % imbecile

Considering that we're not funded through the taxpayers, I wonder why they are even bothering with it :nervous

I'm just waiting for RM to tell us that we've already had our 2% pay rise this year because now we are 39 hours instead of 40 !
That just leaves the 1.4% next year and the 3.5% renegotiated to 0% the year after!

Wahey it's now a 1.4% deal over 4 years. Much better

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.
