CREWE and Nantwich MP Edward Timpson has called on Royal Mail and the Government to communicate with workers over the closure of Crewe sorting office before there are job losses.
Mr Timpson was speaking after talking with local members of the Communication Workers’ Union on Monday – and following on from last week’s national agreement between the union and Royal Mail.
The Conservative MP said: “Pay agreements are great if there are staff to pay. We are still in the dark as to what is happening at the Crewe sorting office.
“Neither Royal Mail nor the Labour Government will say when they are going to close the site, but one thing’s for sure, if they carry on with this attitude such a closure would result in job losses.”
He added: “The CWU and I cannot lobby any harder for the maintenance of this site. The matter is now entirely in the Labour Government’s hands as the 100% owner. We wait to hear from them.”
Royal Mail announced more than 18 months ago it planned to transfer the Crewe work to Warrington.
Up to 600 jobs at the Crewe site will be affected.
Workers are up in arms claiming many will be unable to transfer because they have childcare responsibilities. The move will also add two hours to each working day because of travelling time. Staff have been involved in one-to-one meetings with management to put forward their individual cases.
Steve Wright, branch secretary of the Communication Workers’ Union, said: “There’s no news on the one-to-one meetings. We’ve asked for the Liverpool staff to go to Warrington first because they seem to be ready to go and we’re not because of the appeal process. They’ve ignored what we’re saying.”
