The new agreement between the Royal Mail and the CWU is out as I’m sure you’ve heard by now. I’m looking at a copy now. It’s called – in a phrase which is both ominous and bland at the same time – “Business Transformation 2010 and Beyond.”

I'd be up for that, only I'd have to have a bag over my head to protect my identity (and so all the women don't fall in love with me!)

Re: The New Agreement
Management are banking on the fact that most people will not be arsed to read the agreement and those that do will not be able to penetrate the jargon.
I am guessing that the 1 hour shorter working week will be achieved by reducing the 30mins tea break to the 20mins legal requirement. This will save 10mins a day x 6 = 60mins a week.
The strategy behind producing such an impenetrable document is to make people rely on summaries. The summaries that have been released to the press only show what has been given with one hand, not what has been taken away with the other. It is a masterclass in deception.
Management need agreement to change contracts. Their gameplan is to do this at local level. Local unit managers are being provided with excellent support in the form of training and quick access to expert back up. In contrast, the slow moving structure of the CWU means that local reps are left isolated with no training on new agreements or access to support. The CWU has completely failed to take advantage of the internet.
One of the opposition's most useful weapons is 'confidentiality'. This is used locally to keep staff in the dark. We need a national agreement on what constitutes 'confidentiality' and what information staff should be told. The physical union notice board is not enough and should be supplemented by local workplace internet forums.
We need a national database of grievances and other dispute outcomes that can be accessed by every member. We also need some expert guidance on how these agreements should be implemented. There should be an expert squad that could be called upon in emergencies.
At the very least, we need an agreement on 'confidentiality'.
