A POSTMAN has been fined and ordered to carry out community service after stealing Baileys liqueur samples he was supposed to deliver.
Paul Hallam, aged 56, also stole packages containing DVDs and low-energy lightbulbs, Sheffield Magistrates' Court heard.

Hallam worked at the Royal Mail's north east delivery office on Barnsley Road, Sheffield, Nick White, prosecuting, told the court.

Concerns were raised last November that post was not reaching its destination and an investigation was launched.

A search of Hallam's house discovered 11 first class and second class postal packages, including four DVDs, Baileys liqueur samples and low-energy lightbulbs. In Hallam's wheelie bin the investigators also found 360 mobile phone advertisement flyers he was paid extra to deliver. He was interviewed by investigators and resigned from his job.

Mike Whitworth, defending, said: "What has been found is largely junk mail and in terms of value of items it's a relatively minor theft.

Hallam, of Mason Lathe Road, Shiregreen, pleaded guilty to theft of mail.

Hallam was given a community order of 120 hours' unpaid work and was ordered to pay £500 in costs.
