Campaigners take postcode fight to Royal Mail HQ

CAMPAIGNERS hoping to change their postcode are taking their fight to Royal Mail’s London headquarters.

Although Hawkesbury Village is just over the Warwickshire border, and residents pay their council tax to Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council, the postcode is CV6 which gives a postal address in Longford, Coventry.

For the last seven years residents have been fighting to get the postcode changed to the Warwickshire CV7 as they say the discrepancy causes no end of problems.

But despite sending Royal Mail hundreds of letters, and petitions signed by more than a thousand people, the organisation has so far refused to change the postcode.

On Friday the protesters will be picketing the Royal Mail Head Office in London and say they will continue their fight until they win.

Spokesman Steve Vick said: “We are never going to give in. We are trying to pressure the Royal Mail to change our postcode but they don’t want to.

“We plan to keep going with the campaign until they change their minds.”

He said the campaigners have been further frustrated recently after a number of businesses in the area had their postcodes changed from CV7 to CV6.

“They are not supposed to have one postcode within another postcode area so they changed it.

But if they were going to change anything they should have followed customer demand and changed everyone’s postcode to CV7 instead,” he said.

“But all Royal Mail ever say is they don’t want to cause disruption to businesses.”

He said one of the biggest problems with the postcodes is when residents contact the emergency services, especially the police, as it is not clear whether they come under the West Midlands or Warwickshire force.

There are also issues for people trying to get car and home insurance as the postcode affects the cost, and Mr Vick said he was aware of one neighbourhood watch group which had its funding slashed because it did not have a Warwickshire postcode.

Mr Vick was one of the founding members of the campaign group, along with fellow resident Bryan Bonsor.

The campaigners will be taking banners and placards for the protest outside the Royal Mail on Friday morning.
