Shotgun raid at Hensall Post Office near Selby

ARMED robbers brandishing sawn-off shotguns threatened to shoot a customer if a Selby-area postmaster did not hand over the contents of his safe.

The raid took place at Hensall Post Office, in Finkle Street, at 12.30pm on Thursday.

The postmaster, who did not want to be named, was in the shop with his wife and a customer when two robbers burst in, shouting that they wanted cash and pointing their guns.

He said: “Two big lads – armed robbers – with balaclavas on burst into the post office demanding money from the safe. The robbers told the postmaster’s wife that if she did not hurry up they were going to shoot a customer in the leg.

“It was just total panic and we just did what they wanted us to do. There were shouting, demanding money, and they were agitated and wanted to get it done as quickly as possible.”

The postmaster said the robbers were wearing gloves and black ski-masks so only their eyes were visible.

A spokeswoman for the Royal Mail said: “Following an armed robbery at Hensall Post Office we are giving full assistance to the police in their investigation. We would encourage anyone with information to come forward.”

Police spent much of Thursday at the post office, searching it for clues. They also took away CCTV images. Officers have now appealed to anyone who saw the two robbers or anyone who knows anything else about the raid to come forward.
