Lib Dem leaflet voted a failure after post bungle

LIB Dems in Edinburgh North & Leith have been left red-faced after their campaign newspaper was delivered to homes in the wrong constituency.

Labour activist Kez Dugdale was surprised when she received the literature promoting Kevin Lang, the Lib Dems' candidate in Edinburgh North & Leith, because she lives in Edinburgh East.

The boundary between the two constituencies runs down Easter Road and Abbeyhill – but Ms Dugdale lives 300 metres away in Whyte Place, off Lower London Road.

"There must be at least 1,000 houses between the boundary and my house, at a conservative estimate, so if they have all had this literature that's a big gaffe by the Lib Dems.

"It's difficult enough getting the public to take an interest in politics without causing confusion over which constituency they are in."

Alex Cole-Hamilton, Lib Dem campaign manager in Edinburgh North & Leith, said because party activists were busy delivering specially-targeted literature in the constituency, they had got Royal Mail to deliver the newspaper.

He said that the Royal Mail delivered by postcode area, and one postcode overlaps a boundary.

He said in future they would hand-deliver the newspapers in areas where the constituency boundary clashed with postcode areas.

Lothians Labour MSP George Foulkes was quick to offer his own help. He said: "I've written to Kevin Lang providing him with a map of the North & Leith constituency, in the hope that this will help him get his beleaguered campaign back on track."
