Postal worker sacked as he heads for war zone

Royal Mail bosses in Wimbledon, south London, have sacked
Kevin Tester, a CWU postal worker's union rep. He is also a
part-time soldier awaiting deployment to Afghanistan.

Bosses suspended Kevin after he followed union instructions
to log the details of vans carrying casual workers into his
office during last year's dispute.

A strike-breaking driver attempted to wrestle the notepad
away from Kevin, grabbing him by the arm. The driver then
told police that he had been assaulted.

"My case is due in court next month and I've got several
witnesses that will back my account of what happened."
Kevin told Socialist Worker.

"But Royal Mail are not prepared to wait for its outcome."

"I'm about to be sent into a war zone but that doesn't seem
to matter to Royal Mail."

"They've just seen an opportunity to weaken our union by
picking off the reps."

The lead story on ITN's London Tonight News was about the imminent deployment of
55 London Regiment TA soldiers to Afghanistan. The main interview was with Kevin Tester,
who was shown on his delivery. He is also a Colour Sergeant in the London Regiment.
There were also interviews with his wife and mother. I hope it makes RM ashamed, though
I doubt it.
The programme doesn't seem to be online, yet anyway. If it does go online I'll put up a link.
