Demands are being made for urgent repairs after a Post Office was forced to close it doors following a flood.
Penilee Post Office in the south of Glasgow has been closed for more than four weeks leaving residents without vital services.
It was one of several shops affected by a flood at the premises in Gleddoch Road.
However, unlike a neighbouring newsagents and off-sales and supermarket, the Post Office, which is a council-owned building, has been unable to reopen.
Local Councilllor Alistair Watson has been inundated with complaints from furious residents and he is calling on Glasgow City Council to carry out urgent repairs.
The shops are in a regeneration zone and plans are afoot to relocate them further along Gleddoch Road.
It is thought water came from unoccupied flats above leaving properties needing tens of thousands of pounds of repairs. Water also affected the Post Office’s electronic equipment which will have to be replaced. Residents were told by letter the site would be closed until further notice.
Elderly residents wanting to get their pension now have to travel to Cardonald or Hillington.
Councillor Watson added: “This is unacceptable and I am calling on the council to carry out the repairs to existing shops and expedite the planning process to get the new shops built.
“The Post Office can’t re-open unless repairs are done. My concern is that being without something for so long becomes an excuse to say people are getting used to the current situation of having to travel.
Community council chairman John Goldie has also written to the city council. He said: “This has been going on since Christmas.”
A Post Office spokeswoman said: “As soon as repairs are carried out we will reopen. There is still a lot of water in the premises and it wouldn’t be safe to allow staff into the building.”
Glasgow City Council said investigations had been carried out.
A spokesman said: “We have now instructed contractors to begin work which should be complete by the end of the week. We are hopeful that it can open for trading in early next month.”
