A postman who rammed a potato peeler through a mum-of-two's hand in a jealous rage has been jailed for four years and eight months.

The High Court in Glasgow heard that after Stacey Smith dumped him, Derek Greene, 44, walked for miles to her home, armed with two knives and a hammer.

He smashed his way into her Dundee home, stabbed her with the knives and left a potato peeler impaled on her right hand. Raging Greene carried out the brutal attack in front of two young children.

Judge Lord Turnbull told him: "You have pleaded guilty to a most horrific attack without provocation on a young woman who had done nothing other than to end her relationship with you.

"The photographs of what you did to her are truly awful, particularly the two wounds which put a hole through her hand as she raised her arms to protect herself."

Greene claimed that he had taken the weapons with him because he feared a friend of Miss Smith's would be there and this man had had a fight with him two weeks earlier.

The court heard that Miss Smith had to undergo surgery to have the potato peeler removed from her hand

Greene admitted assaulting Miss Smith to the danger of her life. at Gardyne Place, Dundee, in September last year. Miss Green has been left scarred for life and may never regain full mobility in her damaged hand.

On September 14, Miss Smith was at her home in Dundee's Gardyne Place with a friend and two young children. Greene - armed with two knives - told Miss Smith that he was going to kill her before attacking her with the knives.

Prosecutor Paul Kearney said Greene then went to the kitchen and grabbed a potato peeler as Miss Smith ran outside

Greene soon caught up with her and continued striking her with a knife. He then lashed out with the peeler as Miss Smith raised her right hand to defend herself.

Miss Smith was rushed to hospital with the peeler impaled through her right hand. She also suffered ten knife wound injuries.. She required surgery on her hand after it was found she had suffered nerve and tendon damage.
