True festive spirit

I AM delighted to confirm that the voluntary spirit of Christmas is alive and well. Both my wife Dorothy (80), and I (86) are handicapped following falls. In Dorothy’s case a skid on the pavement resulted in a ‘shattered’ shoulder and a permanently useless arm. In my case a skid in a hospital bathroom left a fractured spine, three months between the Royal and Broadgreen, and permanent reliance on a three wheeled walker.

Naturally in the present wintry conditions we are housebound. Unfortunately we had several very urgent letters to post and my wife asked our postman if he would oblige.

“No problem love” he smiled, turning away; only to return a few minutes later.

“Been thinking,” he said, “I know your circumstances. I’ve got to come back with a separate parcel for the school over there, I’m passing the shops, are you short of anything?”

“Bread”, said a very relieved Dorothy. “Two loaves please, white and brown”.

“No problem,” he grinned, “back in half an hour’’.. and he was.

People have voiced the odd criticism re the Royal Mail but they haven’t met our postie yet; he made our Christmas.
