First Coventry postal workers to start at new site

THE FIRST postal workers to leave Royal Mail’s Bishop Street sorting office as part of a controversial relocation programme will start work at a new site on January 11.

The postmen who serve the CV6 area will be the first to arrive at the new Coventry City North delivery office, on Blue Ribbon Park, near Phoenix Way, followed by the CV2 and CV7 teams on January 18.

From then any residents in those postcode areas who want to pick up undelivered mail will have to travel to the new office.

The move is the first stage in a series of changes that will eventually see the city centre offices closed.

But Dave Hatton, the communication workers union’s area delivery representative for the area, says the facilities at the Coventry City North site don’t match up to what staff are used to.

“The welfare facilities aren’t acceptable,” he said. “But we are meeting with directors to try and sort the issues out.

“At the moment there are going to be 160 people working at the new site but there’s only 40 seats and no canteen facilities in the rest area.

“Our opposition isn’t to moving – it’s to the conditions we are being expected to move to.

“I do accept the car parking situation will be better but when the plans were first discussed staff were told they would all have a parking space.

“There are only 86 spaces so we’re not getting what we promised.”

The new Coventry City North site will have six dedicated parking spaces for customers and on-street parking nearby.

The rest of the delivery staff at Bishop Street, serving the CV1, CV3, CV4, CV5 and CV8 area, will stay on until the new Coventry City South base opens.

Planning permission for the new development, on the Orchard Retail Park near Toll Bar End, has just been granted and a spokesman for Royal Mail anticipated that staff would not transfer there until the end of next year.

The sorting office at Bishop Street will also close at a later date and move to the Northampton area.
