Royal Mail apologises for 100-mile mix-up

The Royal Mail has apologised after a Christmas card sent to an address in County Dublin was delivered to a street of the same name in Glengormley.

The errant card was addressed to Beeches Park, Glenageary, County Dublin but went instead to The Beeches, Glengormley, County Antrim.

The card, which had a 56p stamp so that it could be delivered to the Irish Republic, has now been re-directed but is unlikely to make it before the big day.

Glengormley man Peter McGarvey, who took delivery of the card, said that he was surprised to receive it.

"Clearly, there has been a bad mix-up but we'll get the card forwarded and it should not be too late," he said.

"I just hope it is not the only card the lady concerned is expecting."

In a statement the Royal Mail said it was an isolated incident.

"Royal Mail handles 2,000,000 items each day in Northern Ireland and this more than doubles at this time of year. The vast majority of these are delivered on time and to the correct address.

"If anyone receives an item not for their address they should re-post it or give it back to the postman."
