Brave postman risks life to save residents

A HEROIC postman risked his life to make sure his neighbours were evacuated from their homes in Woodston as two burning cars nearby threatened to explode at any moment.
Trevor Wilson, of Flamborough Close, Woodston, Peterborough, was trying to sleep when he heard an explosion from one of the parked vehicles at around 1.30am yesterday (Wednesday, 2 December).

Seeing the flames from his window, he darted out of his room to alert the other residents living in the three-storey complex of the imminent danger.

Mr Wilson (37) said: "At first I was scared for my life. I was trying to get to sleep when I heard an huge bang.

"I looked out of my window and saw flames everywhere. Then I realised other people might not have been woken by it as the cars were only next to my flat. So I made sure I knocked on everyone's doors to let them know."

Residents from all six flats got out of the house with no injuries while fire engines raced to the scene.

A fire crew battled flames for an hour before allowing them to return to their flats at 2.45am.

Mr Wilson's kitchen window was completely destroyed by the explosion which also singed his wall.

Mike Fowler, from Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service's Arson Task Force, said: "This was a fire started deliberately that put the lives of a lot of people at serious risk.

"Anyone who considers starting fires should seriously think about what they are doing.

"If someone died you would be legally and emotionally responsible for that for the rest of your life."

Just 15 minutes before fire engines were called to the blaze, a fire was started just minutes away in Jubilee Street, Woodston.

A couple and their young baby slept through the fire involving three wheelie bins outside their home.

A police spokesperson said: "I can confirm that we are investigating whether or not the two incidents are connected. Anybody with information should call 0345 456 4564."

In a separate incident, arsonists set fire to a sofa in a communal stairwell in flats in Crown Street, New England at 12.05pm yesterday.
