ELLESMERE residents must register their complaints about their postal service if delivery problems are to be addressed, Royal Mail managers told town councillors.
Four months after the re-location of Ellesmere’s delivery office to Oswestry, members called the meeting following numerous complaints from residents about the service since its relocation.
Unitary Councillor Ann Hartley said: “We were told we would not notice a difference in service but all of us have had members of the community, who we are here to represent, complain to us.
“We can almost say we told you so and been proven right.”
Complaints reported to the Royal Mail bosses included regular mis-deliveries, town centre mail arriving at 3pm and the collection of parcels from Oswestry.
However, Pearl Webster, Oswestry’s delivery office manager, who is responsible for the operation in Ellesmere told members she had received only one complaint from Ellesmere.
She added: “With respect I cannot put right what I do not know about.
The only way to judge performance is by complaints, if I have none I presume my postmen are doing their job adequately.
“You have every right to expect your mail delivered directly to you, if you are not getting it we want to know about it.”
Cllr Lynne Davies said people had complained to their councillors because they did not know how to complain directly to Royal Mail.
Pearl Webster said customers should call 0845 740 740 where complaints will be logged and sent to her.
For carded items - where mail cannot be delivered because the resident is out - customers should call the number on the card, 01691 402050, which will take them directly through to Oswestry Delivery Office.
