A ROYAL Mail manager ripped open envelopes containing greetings cards and stole cash inside, a court has heard.
David Baker was shown on CCTV apparently targeting coloured envelopes, dropping them back into a bin and then making suspicious movements with his hands out of sight of the camera.
Baker, aged 47, of Rocky Park Road, Plymstock, denies five charges of theft from postal packets on October 3 last year. He also denies charges of interfering with postal packets on October 2 and 3.
Kelly Scrivener, prosecuting, told the jury at Plymouth Crown Court that Baker had opened greetings cards in search of cash and stolen their contents.
She said that on October 2, investigator Sarah Potterton saw Baker in the Plymouth Mail Centre at Plymstock acting suspiciously, apparently opening letters and putting his hand into his right-hand trouser pocket.
The next night, an observation team watched and filmed Baker for an hour before taking him to an office for questioning, bringing with them envelopes which had been interfered with, the jury heard.
A pink envelope and a red envelope had each lost £20 and another letter a £10 note and a £2 coin, the court heard.
Later, it emerged that £20 and £5 were missing from two other envelopes.
The court heard that when Baker was searched, his hip pocket contained a wallet with some change and a neatly folded £5 note.
In his front right trouser pocket was £75 in crumpled notes and a £2 coin.
Plymouth Mail Centre night manager Neal Rowe commented as the CCTV footage was played to the jury. He said that the sorting Baker was doing was not his responsibility, and Baker had no need to be doing it.
He added: "My manager is paying a lot of interest to those items – the colour-coded cards."
He admitted under cross-examination by Nick Lewin that Baker habitually started his shift early and helped with sorting the post.
The trial continues.

I wonder if he was well liked, I mean as a manger? I ask this, because some other manager who I once had the displeasure of getting to know, and later to despise was also caught doing something along similar lines.
We posties do things differently, but we still get shot at!
