A postman from Peterborough was sentenced to six months behind bars after admitting stealing packages containing women's underwear and pornographic DVDs.

Alec Clark (35), of Chaucer Road, New England, Peterborough, pleaded guilty to two charges of theft, between January 2001 and April 2009, and was sentenced by Peterborough Magistrates' Court yesterday (monday, 12 October). He will serve a minimum of three months in prison.

Royal Mail investigators received a tip-off on May 19 that items intended for delivery had been found stored in the loft of Clark's former home in Walgrave, Orton Malborne, Peterborough.

A raid uncovered 10 packages, including sex toys and 60 pieces of lingerie in his attic. A search at Clark's current home found stolen pornographic DVDs under his bed.

A spokesman for the Royal Mail said: "We have a zero tolerance approach to dishonesty and that stance is shared by the overwhelming majority of postmen and women.

"All employees are expected to do all they can to protect the mail and deliver it safely."

Clark admitted that he started stealing five months after he started work for Parcelforce, which is owned by Royal Mail.

He was employed as a delivery driver and collections manager, first in Peterborough and then in Cambridge.

He moved out of the house where the items were found on December 30 last year.

He admitted taking the items in May this year and was immediately suspended from his job.

District Judge Lloyd said: "This is a very serious crime and I have no option but to commit you to a custodial sentence. It also needs to be a deterrent sentence because you were in a position of trust.

"There is also a chance that you opened a lot more parcels that turned out to not be what you expected."

Richard Brown, prosecuting, said: "A raid on the home uncovered 10 postal packets from a variety of different companies. including Pabo, who sell sex toys, and Figleaves, a women's lingerie firm.

"When he was shown the items he admitted that they had come from the post."

Sting caught out worker stealing card cash

A thieving postal worker was jailed after being caught out by a Royal Mail sting.

Yesterday, Peterborough Magistrates' Court sentenced David Spencer (27) to four months in prison after he pleaded guilty to two charges of theft and one of delaying deliveries.

Royal Mail was alerted to a problem on his route after a member of the public reported finding three children's birthday cards in bushes on June 8.

To test if Spencer had been abusing his position bosses planted test greeting cards among the items he was delivering.

Later that day, none of the items had reached their destination and cash placed in the cards by Royal Mail had disappeared.

A search of his home in Rose Court, Yaxley, Peterborough, on July 17 revealed 113 addressed items and 545 junk-mail leaflets had been taken.

Spencer claimed his actions were due to debts of £27,000 and family stress.

He admitted taking the £30 placed in the cards by Royal Mail, as well as £5 from the cards found in the bushes.

A POSTMAN has pleaded guilty to stealing around 11,000 items of mail.

Asa Dilliway, 36, of Fellcroft, Pitsea, admitted snatching letters and parcels belonging to Royal Mail between December 2006 and October 2008.

In February, police recovered 58 bin sacks filled with mail, 76 Royal Mail red delivery bags, and a red postman’s bicycle during a raid on a house in Swanstead, Vange.

Kerry Brockett, 28, of Swanstead, Vange, appeared alongside Dilliway at Basildon Crown Court on Friday, and pleaded guilty to dishonestly receiving the stolen mail.

Brockett had pleaded not guilty at a previous hearing.

Another defendant Michelle Bradley, 29, of Mistley Path, Vange, also pleaded guilty to dishonestly receiving the stolen mail.

All three were part of a scam.

At the hearing, Bradley also pleaded guilty to one charge of possessing the drug amphetamine.

A fourth defendant, Arthur Cox, 34, who was arrested during the February raid, also appeared in court, but was released without charge.

The court heard Dilliway and Bradley were of previous good character. All four have been released on bail.

They will reappear at the court on November 5.
