'Hero' postie special delivery

A POSTMAN who rushed a pregnant woman to hospital when he spotted her in labour on her doorstep has been hailed a hero by the new mum.
Kimberly Roberts, of Wansfell Road, Grimesthorpe, Sheffield, was stranded at home with no transport when plucky postie Paul Coleman passed by and helped with a very special delivery.

Two years ago, Paul was mauled by vicious dogs while doing his rounds, and had to spend seven months off work following the horrific attack.

Now recovered but scarred for life, Paul was back out on his patch delivering post on Wansfell Road when he saw Kimberly in a distressed state on her doorstep.

She told The Star: "I was outside my door, and the postman was passing just as I was in pain.

"He didn't hesitate - he looked over to me and shouted across the road, 'Wait there, don't move, I'll get you straight to the hospital'.

"He drove me straight there because I'd got no transport. He was just absolutely fantastic."

The 25-year-old added: "He's a friendly postman - even if I was a stranger I'm sure he would have done it anyway. I can't thank him enough."

Kimberly's waters had broken two hours earlier, and when she arrived at the Jessop Wing maternity hospital her contractions became more severe.

Neither Kimberly nor her partner Gary Owen, 27, own a car, and she was unable to get in touch with her sister-in-law to take her to hospital.

Kimberly said: "We were really stuck, I was panicking. Paul said to me, 'No, no waiting for an ambulance, I've got a car', and he brought it round within seconds.

"He did everything he possibly could, more than I expected. He even got my bags before I got out of the car at hospital, came round and opened the door and took me into reception. He didn't leave until someone was there to assist me."

Modest Paul, 41, said he felt it was his duty to help Kimberly when he saw her in distress.

"I don't know if it is unusual. They're my customers, I just thought she was in pain, and you don't really want her to have a baby in the house. It was my duty, it was a good thing to do to take her up there," he said.

Straight after taking her to hospital, the dedicated postie went back to Wansfell Road to carry on with his deliveries - while Kimberly gave birth to a baby girl, Jersie, weighing a healthy 6lb 11oz.

Jersie is now settling in at home with mum, dad, brothers Ben, nine, Gary, five, and sister Paige, three.

Two years ago Paul, of Norfolk Park, was mauled by a pair of vicious pit bull terriers as he delivered Christmas mail on Rothay Road, Grimesthorpe. He was dragged to the ground and pulled yards into the road, and needed six hours of surgery after being bitten almost to the bone.

Jamal Richards, the teenage owner of the dogs, was jailed for nine months under the Dangerous Dogs Act, but Paul is still waiting for compensation.

Truly heartwarming story of postman who is an asset to his community.
Certainly not a Spanish practice , but i bet his manager gave him grief for finishing late!
If rm get their way we will have a a totally flexible workforce meaning more casual/ part time staff ,
and staff all on different rounds as and when is the whim of their employer.
They probably wont have the time or inclination for social interaction.
and customers are less likely to ask for help from a stranger.
