BBC test shows problems at the Royal Mail, while the CWU blasts the use of casual workers to clear the backlog.

Out of ten test letters posted by BBC London two weeks ago, only six have arrived at their destination.

In addition, the Communication Workers Union (CWU) claims that a backlog of 15 million parcels and letters may never be delivered, meaning people may want to explore alternative parcel delivery options in the future.

Meanwhile, the CWU has claimed that the Royal Mail has started to employ casual workers to clear the mail currently sat in sorting offices across the country.

A spokesman for the Royal Mail told the news provider that the temporary staff may not fulfil all of the legal requirements that must be met when dealing people's parcels and letters.

"Because of the strike, there is a backlog of millions. Royal Mail have employed casuals - who we believe have not been security cleared - to undermine the strike and exclusively deal with the backlog," the representative said.

Meanwhile, the CWU recently announced that strike action will take place in the Devon and Cornwall regions next week.

This backlog thing is a strange one,on one hand i'm delivering letters 2 weeks old,and on the other 2 days old,and then packets one day old,all from the same motor!
