Business leaders call on Government to end postal service chaos
With postal strikes set to worsen today, business chiefs have called on the Government to take swift action toImage of Government buildings settle the matter.
Strike action has already been taken by a number of postal workers, who are said to be disgruntled over job losses, pay cuts and changes to overall working conditions. The Communications Workers Union (CWU) claims that the postal backlog is now worse than the 2007 national strike.
Many are concerned that the strike action will further impact already struggling small businesses, which are largely dependent on the services of the Royal Mail. David Frost, Director General of the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC), said:
“If the government is serious about helping businesses get through this recession, it needs to get a grip on these postal strikes. The disruption has dragged on for far too long and neither the Royal Mail nor the unions involved have shown enough leadership. The net result is that businesses are suffering at a time when they can least afford it.”
Images of Royal Mail managerial staff sorting letters on the street after certain offices were closed has shocked many of its customers, who will be hoping that the postal service returns to normal shortly.
