Royal Mail plans to transfer work to Nottingham

ROYAL Mail has announced that a portion of the work dealt with in Derby is to be transferred to Nottingham.

Union leaders say the announcement was made to staff this morning and has raised concerns about the future of jobs at the city mail centre.

Lee Barron, Midlands regional secretary of the Communication Workers Union, said: "Royal Mail's unilateral transfer of work from Derby to Nottingham is a huge issue for concern.

"Many questions remain unanswered and the workforce is naturally insecure over the future. We will not accept this as the first of a drip, drip approach, leading to the eventual loss of Derby Mail Centre and hundreds of jobs.

"We are committed to fighting for postal services and jobs in Derby and we will be seeking a number of assurances from Royal Mail to protect the long term future of Royal Mail in Derby."

As part of the plans 150,000 second class items of mail will be transferred to Nottingham for sorting from Wednesday.
