Homes evacuated after postal arson attack

SEVEN homes were evacuated after an arson attack at Cullompton Delivery Office in the early hours of this morning.

Staff at the Royal Mail facility in Fore Street have been praised for “pulling out all the stops” to ensure the mail was delivered on time.

A Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said the blaze started just before 1am when pallets and postal sacks were set alight to the rear of the building.

The fire spread to the ground floor of the building, which was badly damaged by flames and smoke.

Fire investigators and scenes of crime police officers were still on the scene this morning.

A Devon and Cornwall spokeswoman said officers were alerted by an intruder alarm and on arrival discovered the building on fire and alerted the brigade.

She added: “It is being treated as suspicious.

“Police evacuated residents from seven adjacent premises as a precautionary measure.

“We wish to speak to the occupants of a white transporter van.”

Ian Frankum, Royal Mail area delivery manager, said: “I want to thank our great team for pulling out all the stops and working flat out in difficult conditions to ensure the delivery of the mail as normal.

“Fortunately no-one was in the building at the time of the fire and no mail was lost in the incident.

“The back of the building is quite badly damaged and we are waiting for reports from the fire service.”
