Post services in Putney and Wandsworth Town post could remain undelivered for weeks when a new computer system is implemented on Monday, a postal workers union has said.
The Communication Workers Union (CWU) is currently staging a series of one-day strikes opposing changes in working conditions brought on by the implementation of Pegasus.
Bosses at Royal Mail (RM) said Pegasus, which calculates delivery routes for post workers, would make services more efficient but the CWU said planned redundancies meant postmen working longer rounds, and, therefore, not having the time to deliver all mail.
Putney MP Justine Greening said residents were caught in the middle.
Pegasus was installed in Wimbledon on August 24 and is due to be implemented in Putney and Wandsworth Town on September 14.
Greg Charles, branch secretary of the CWU in south west London, said those postmen not being made redundant still have to sort mail by street and house number and were being asked to do longer rounds.
He said: “It is going to be chaos in Putney on Monday. Mountains of post are gathering in Wimbledon where they have cut rounds. There hasn’t been a full delivery since August 24 when the system was brought in.
“They have got in managers from all over the country and temporary staff to deal with the back-log.
“In Wimbledon they have 147 employees and are losing one third of the workforce.”
Paul Tolhurst, RM’s operations director, said union strikes were political posturing. He said: “RM is getting on with modernisation in an entirely fair and reasonable way which is completely in line with our existing agreement with the union on flexible working practices.”
Ms Greening said she had met with the union and contacted RM, but didn’t agree with the strike action.
“The strikes come at a bad time for our small businesses, especially those that rely on the post,” she said. “There needs to be value for money and better services but people have seen post offices closed down and deliveries cut from twice to once a day. I’m looking at the dispute from both sides but in the meantime businesses, who are already having a hard time, and residents are stuck in the middle.”
