Two men hurt in four-car crash in Shirley

TWO young men were badly hurt when their car was involved in a four-vehicle collision in Shirley.

The pair, both aged 20, had to be cut out of their Subaru estate, which was wrecked in the crash on the Stratford Road.

It happened at 4.45pm yesterday.

One was taken to Selly Oak Hospital by air ambulance with chest and abdomen injuries while the other was taken to Heartlands Hospital with internal injuries.

The driver of a Royal Mail delivery van was also taken to Heartlands, and motorists from the other two vehicles were treated for shock at the scene.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said in total four people were treated at the scene, and three taken to hospital.

Three fire crews attended and spokesman said: “Three men were trapped at the incident, two due to the nature of their injuries, and the other because of the damage to a van.

“Specialist cutting equipment was used until they were conveyed to hospital via ambulance and air ambulance.”

Sue Jones was walking in Stratford Road when the accident took place.

“All of a sudden there was a loud bang,” the 52-year-old said.

“It was such a shock and you didn’t know where to look because there were cars everywhere.”

Narendre Parmar, a retired shop owner, was watching television in his house and said all he heard was a ‘huge bang’.

“It was so loud so I rushed outside and it was horrible to see what had happened,” said the 61-year-old.

Surrounding roads were grid-locked as the accident caused havoc for drivers during the evening rush hour.

Police officers eventually re-opened the road at 7pm.
