Post office is saved from closure

A village post office may have won a reprieve from closure, days before it was due to close its doors.

The Post Office said it had reached a "provisional agreement" to allow the office in Talybont near Aberystwyth to remain open beyond Monday.

Talks with villagers to replace it with an "outreach" service had come to a halt, officials said last month.

The decision to shut Talybont post office was made in June 2008 as part of a series of cutbacks in the UK.

The Post Office said it was "delighted to announce" that a "provisional agreement" had been reached over the future of Talybont.

It said it would mean that mail services would continue from the village's general stores under a new partnership arrangement with the sub-postmaster of Penparcau in Aberystwyth.

'New partnership'

The Post Office's network development manager Tony Jones said: "I am delighted that the way forward has been agreed, and I am sure that the villagers will welcome this news.

"I would like to thank the local elected representatives of the area for their contribution in reflecting the needs of the community and to Mr (Peter) Edwards (Penparcau sub-postmaster) and Mrs (Heulwen) Astley in agreeing this new partnership."

Mrs Astley said she was in talks with the Post Office.

She said: "I am in discussion with the Post Office about the possibility of carrying on and about trying to resolve the outreach problem in Talybont."

But she urged her customers to "use it or lose it" when it came to her shop and the post office.
