Traffic attendants' dispute over

Around half of Belfast's traffic attendants were sacked in the dispute.

A dispute between Belfast traffic attendants and their employer, which led to around half the workforce being sacked, has now been resolved.

In a statement, the traffic attendants' union NIPSA and their employer NSL Ltd, said an agreement had been reached.

Twenty-six of the city's traffic attendants were dismissed in April following an unofficial strike.

The statement said some of the sacked workers have been reinstated while others have agreed to leave.

The traffic attendants launched a wildcat strike in April because they were unhappy about their working conditions, including sickness pay and rota changes.

Two weeks later their employer dismissed 26 staff members for taking part in what it called an "illegal action".

On Friday NIPSA's General Secretary John Corey said: "We are pleased that after intensive and constructive talks with the company we have been able to agree a resolution.

"I pay tribute to the traffic attendants for the way they campaigned for an acceptable resolution which has been achieved".

He also thanked trade unionists and people who had supported the traffic attendants during their dispute who he said recognised "the vital job that they do for the community".

Speaking on behalf of the company which employs the traffic attendants, Tim Cowen from NSL Ltd said: "We are pleased that we have been able to resolve this issue with NIPSA and arrive at a conclusion which is acceptable to both parties.

"In particular we welcome NIPSA's acknowledgement of NSL's commitment to health and safety issues and their commitment to work with us on absence management procedures."

Now, who says union can't win anything :hmmmm It may only be a small victory but it does show that employers can't just do what they want.
