DUNMOW’S postal delivery office is being moved 10 miles to Braintree in the new year.

The Royal Mail has confirmed it is closing its base in the flitch town’s High Street. However, the adjacent Post Office branch, which has just been refurbished, will remain open.

Health and safety, coupled with space issues, have been blamed for the move to Lakes Road in Braintree, where building work is being carried out to accommodate the merged operation.

Improvements include a much-extended car park for staff and visitors.

James Taylor, Royal Mail’s external relations manager, told the town council: “Royal Mail has been looking at plans to relocate Dunmow for some years because the site is simply not ideal for purpose.

“A number of options have been considered previously for a new site, but the decision was taken to relocate to an extended Braintree operation, partly because no suitable sites were identified locally.

“However, customers can be assured that the relocation will mean no change to their deliveries. Indeed, they will continue to be able to collect mail locally at the attached Post Office branch in the High Street.”

Mr Taylor assured councillors: “We continue to work closely with staff on all issues associated with the move and there will be no job losses as a direct result of the change.”

After the change in January, Dunmow residents will also be able to arrange to have items redelivered at http://www.royalmail.com/redelivery" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; or by calling the number on the back of the card left by the postman.
