floaters days off.

Post by darth »

our rep asked why the floaters didnt get a regular saturday off and was fobbed off with the reply.bsically that covering duties was expected on saturdays.i seem to think however that there is something concrete that they should get regular saturdays off.can anyone help? i know in weekly resource meeting s the rotas should be covered in advance but it doesnt appear to be the case in our office at the moment.personally i feel that they are being discriminated at the expense of a dom who cant be arsed to work out days off that are at least distributed a bit more favourable.

Way forward, there is something in there that floaters should get as much as poss the same amount of long weekends off as regulars .

It's something that is well verced on here, the idea is that resource meetings should be able to see that reserves have not had a long weekend/sat off and adjust.
Offices should really have a list of what reserves do and when a long weekend or sat off comes up should then know who it should go to regardless of their seniorty.

ive had murders with this recently. realyy p*ssing me off. i waited 18 weeks for a long weekend, while i was watching others get 2 saturdays off within 3 weeks of eachother (and working them, just to make matters worse) so i broke and went to see a manager and tiold him us rti's should get a regular long weekend every 6 weeks like everyone else. i was told that theres nothing in writing and that i have whatever day off im told to have. i got my weekend off in the end, but wonder how long it will be til i get another. bet its not 6 weeks time.

aren't the floaters/reserves suppossed to have the same number of saturdays off in order to make the hours worked the same.

in our office we work 5 x 39 3/4 hour weeks then when its our saturday off we work a 41 1/4 hour week to even it out as working 240 hours over every 6 weeks.

therefore if you never or rarely get a saturday off you would be working less hours

Everyone has to be treated the same, that's what RM keep spouting.

It is not hard to have a rota and someone keeping an eye on it.
Perhaps the reserves affected in the offices should get together, and the rep should also be pushing this as well!

Another thing that reps should get involved in that crops up on here a lot as well is the changing of days off on duties when it suits them.
Reps should be on the ball here,if you're due walk '5' next week and the day off is a sat then that's the day off you should get,not a tues cause it suits the DOM.

That's the normal practice in my office. When you speak to the DOM about it, the reason is because of "operational needs!!!!!!!!!!!" . All the rep says he will talk to the DOM and sort it out. But, as always the same happens the following week. :arrrghhh

With regard to saturdays off, i've given up arguing this point in my office. I've asked for this to be looked into so many times it become a joke, nothing will ever get sorted out. :arrrghhh :arrrghhh

At my DO we work 5-day weeks with the rotating day off.

Should there not be a distinction made between what defines a 'floater' and a 'reserve'?

My understanding would be that the 'floater' is a duty holder who happens to cover 5 different duties. And it is the 'reserve' who gets dumped on regularly with different delivery duties as well as not having a regular pattern to their day off.

Yes, Postman, Reps do need to be more aware and in the face of the DOM over the issue as it can cause a lot of upset and frustration within a DO. It is for the Dom and Rep to sort these details out through the use of WRMs when difficulties arise. The situation can arise because staff in general are not trained on other duties so that cover can be found for duties with the minimum of distruption to all.

Some duties are more equal than others it appears.

yes ahebban sorry i meant reserve although the floaters do occasionally get stitched up.of course we would like to emulate the management team who sucessfully have a 1 in 3 saturday off and early finish to boot as well.so some delivery offices are equal but some are more equal in others.also thankyou to some very useful posts .

Floaters then are what we call 'rest day covers' they have a duty ie their rest day cover duty,so there should not be a problem with them and their days off.

Reserves are the postal equivalent of Junior Doctors perhaps? ... crappy hours, put upon daily, stitched up, etc, etc ... variety is not necessarily the spice of life!
